Kiln-changing glaze, and a handle wrapped in twine.

The handle is bound in hand-woven twine, which sits warm in the hand rather than hot — the point of it is that you can hold the cup while the coffee is still too hot to hold. The body is deliberately irregular: pinched sides, a rim that rises and falls rather than running level, and a footprint closer to square than round.

The glaze is kiln-changing, so the colour shifts in the firing rather than being painted on. Where it pools it goes deep, where it thins it breaks toward the clay underneath. Speckling lands where it lands. No two are the same.

The glazes

• Kiln Green — soft celadon breaking to pale mint.

• Kiln Pink — chalk white washed through with dusty rose.

• Kiln Blue — denim blue over a sand-coloured rim.

• Kiln Brown — amber and rust, heavily speckled.
